"Processor Modulation Density Sequencer (Thisco, 2012) was PMDS first album. The band used a self-explanatory title as a manifest to serve as a guide to the listener. The duo composed by Pedro Sousa and Filipe Caetano is back almost a decade later, with “Caloura”, a warm and cosy record full of cosmic nuances.
During its 40 minutes, “Caloura” travels around a myriad of ideas and references, travelling around different subgenres of electronic/ambient music, but using a unique set of rules and codes. Each track has its own narrative, most of them have surprising twists, some of them happen right at the beginning. It seems they wanted to point you and some direction and, suddenly, take you to the opposite side. Nothing wrong with that. Especially when it is done in such a smooth way, like they do.
“Berlin” takes you to the mechanical rhythms of Neu!, without making it sound like krautrock or kosmische pastiche. It’s a brave and muscled use of machines in the context of current day electronics. “Canyon” or “ETST” takes us to Radiohead’s “Kid A” and “Amnesiac” and quickly derives to something closer to a Clint Mansell soundtrack.
“Nippon” subtly synthesis “Caloura” fullness as a record that wants the listener to embrace different sides of electronic, in a calm and comfortable way. PMDS’s second record sums well this idea that rhythm in electronic doesn’t need to be angular, aggressive, or deviant. It can be something comfortable and stable. “Caloura” is up there in the clouds." - ANDRÉ SANTOS

about

PMDS Azores, Portugal

PMDS is an electronic act that incorporates elements of ambient, experimental, and techno; formed by Pedro Sousa and Filipe Caetano. The former has classical piano training and Filipe has many miles as a DJ -- both share a (un)controllable passion for analog gear, synthesizers, and other gadgets that only similar freaks will recognize.
